Description
The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Austin, built in 1838, is a brick structure with stone dressings and a stone facade, topped with a slate roof. The gabled facades feature octagonal flanking turrets with a drip mould at the eaves level, which likely once had pinnacles. The gabled porch is flanked by lancet windows and supported by diagonal buttresses, with a niche containing a statue and additional lancets. A prominent rose window with iron tracery and a top louvred lancet is also present. The church has five-bay returns with lancets positioned between buttresses, along with a drip mould and parapet.
Inside, there is a west gallery supported by iron columns. The pointed arched chancel recess displays a large painting of the crucifixion above the reredos, accompanied by a dove in a panel above. To the right, there is a similar chapel recess with a traceried gablet, and a pointed arched panel with an entrance and gablet. The interior also features some painted glass.
