Description

Woolton Hall is a house built in 1704 and later enlarged and re-fronted by Robert Adam between 1774 and 1780. The porte cochere was added around 1865. The building is constructed of stone with a slate roof and features two storeys with seven bays, including two bays that project forward under pediments. It has sill bands, top friezes, a cornice, and a blocking course. The windows are sash with glazing bars and have architraves. The porte cochere is supported by four paired Doric columns between rusticated antae, topped with an entablature and a balustrade. The door features ormolu mounts. The ends of the building have medallions between the floors, and the central frieze includes roundels, all painted to resemble Jasper ware. The right return has eight bays, with two central bays that project forward under a pediment adorned with trophies, as well as sill bands, a top frieze, and cornice. The quoins are decorated with triglyphs above a central shield in the frieze, flanked by additional triglyphs. The rear of the building features a bow with an applied distyle Doric colonnade and three entrances with eared architraves, each having panels above with swags. Inside, there are two early 18th-century rooms with panelling and fluted pilasters, along with gilded details. A late 18th-century octagon room showcases rich plaster decoration on the entrances, frieze, and ceilings, as well as segmental-headed recesses and a fireplace. Some original details remain in the doorcases, staircase, and two ceilings.
