Description
The War Memorial Cross, located in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church in Wavertree, was created around 1920 by sculptor George Herbert Tyson Smith. It is made of ashlar limestone and features statuary and relief carving. The memorial consists of a tapering stone cross that rises from a stepped plinth on a truncated pyramidal base. The cross has a rectangular section with stub cross arms, and flanking the cross shaft are two classically-draped female figures, each holding laurel wreaths and standing on inset stepped plinths.
At the front base of the cross, there is a dedicatory panel inscribed with "To the enduring memory of Wavertree men who laid down their lives in the Great War." The rear panel features a relief sculpture of 'the Pelican in her Piety,' depicting a female pelican drawing blood from her own body to feed her young, above the inscription "Pro Patria 1914-1918," with "1939-1945" added below.
Tyson Smith, recognized as one of Liverpool's most notable sculptors, received this commission after serving in the Royal Flying Corps. He also completed the bronze relief panels on the Liverpool Cenotaph at St George's Hall. The memorial is part of a group with Holy Trinity Church.
