Description

Bluecoat School is a school building constructed between 1903 and 1906 by architects Briggs, Wolstenholme and Thornely, with a tower added in 1915. It is made of red brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. The main range runs parallel to the street, with additional ranges located behind it. The building has a one-storey, nine-bay central section flanked by two recessed and lower seven-bay wings.

The design includes an entablature and a brick parapet, with the end bays highlighted by quoin strips and segmental open pediments. The round-headed windows are adorned with eared architraves and keys featuring cherubs, and they are sashed with glazing bars. The end bay windows have triple keys with flanking swags and shields topped with cherub crests. The flanking wings mirror this design, while the central bay of each projects slightly with rounded angles and a hipped roof. The windows also include tripartite casements with leaded glazing.

The central entrance is framed by an aedicule featuring paired Ionic columns and an open pediment, which encloses a coved recess with channelled rustication, an archivolt, and a cartouche key. The entrance itself has an eared architrave with a key, frieze, and cornice, with the arms of Liverpool displayed above. The tower is accentuated by quoin strips and features a four-faced clock, along with a parapet that has balustrading and four Tuscan aedicules. A swept stone finial and a bronze urn complete the tower's design. The interior has not been inspected. According to Pevsner, this building is considered "one of the most spectacular half-dozen (buildings) of its date in Lancashire."
