Description

The Cottage is a house, dated 1639 above the main door, though it has undergone later alterations. It is constructed of dressed stone with ashlar quoins, and has a slate roof. The house is two storeys high with a basement, and has two bays. Gable ends feature saddle stones and small shaped kneelers. The southern pitch of the main roof and a short south wing were heightened at a later date, using brick contemporary with the chimneys. The wing has a cat-slide roof and a flat-topped tile-hung dormer. Some original iron casement windows survive on the front, while others have been replaced with later wooden frames, containing three-light or two-light panes, all with stone lintels. An early 19th-century semi-circular ashlar porch, featuring a string and blocking course, has been added. A rear entrance to the wing is accessed by a flight of wooden steps, leading to a plain cottage door beneath a stone lintel. The building is a notable feature in the vicinity of Allerton Hall.
