Description
The Midland Railway Goods Offices is a warehouse built in 1874 for the Midland Railway Company. It occupies the entire block bordered by Victoria Street, Crosshall Street, Whitechapel, and Peter Street, except for a small square block at the south-west corner. The building features a brick structure on a stone base, with stone dressings, stone flush bands bordered by blue brick, and a top cornice adorned with modillions. It has a hipped slate roof and consists of a 2-storey, 3-bay block alongside a 3-storey, 4-bay block to the right, with an 8-bay return facing Crosshall Street. The facade includes giant round relieving arches with keystones and bands, with 8 arches on the concave facade to Crosshall Street, featuring 2 large round-arched entrances below. The Whitechapel facade has segmental arched entrances and a single-storey low wing to the south-west with round-arched lancets that were formerly stables. On the Victoria Street facade, there are carved spandrels displaying a shield of arms and the names of Midland Railway stations. The offices, which are 3 storeys high and 4 bays wide, have sash windows with glazing bars on each floor, along with 3 additional windows on each floor facing Peter Street.
