Description

The Huskisson Monument, located in Saint James' Cemetery, was built in 1836 and designed by J. Foster. This circular structure is constructed of stone and showcases a Greek Revival style. The base features channelled rustication and an entrance with an architrave and a 20th-century gate. The upper section is adorned with an attached Corinthian colonnade, which has high square openings on a sill band with iron grilles. An entablature with antefixae crowns the structure, topped by a shallow stone dome that includes lights and a cross. Inside, there was originally a statue of William Huskisson, created by John Gibson, which has since been removed. Huskisson was a Member of Parliament for Liverpool and served as President of the Board of Trade; he tragically died in 1830 when he was run over during the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The design of the monument is inspired by the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens.
