Description

Sudley Museum and Art Gallery is a house built around 1830, which has been converted into an art gallery. It features extensions and alterations from the 1880s. The building is constructed of stone and has a hipped slate roof. It stands two storeys high and has four bays, with the end two bays projecting and the left-hand end recessed, displaying two raised panels. The first-floor sill board, top cornice, and blocking course are present. The windows are sash style without glazing bars, with paired sashes in the fifth bay. The porch is supported by Doric columns and has an Ionic entablature, with a small extension to the right. Stained glass windows can be found on the front and left return. The end two bays feature lateral stacks and a small cupola. The left return has three bays, with the central bay recessed. The end bays have tripartite windows, and the central bay has a tetrastyle Doric porch with an Ionic entablature. The garden front consists of five bays, with two recessed bays at both the left and right ends, also featuring two raised panels. It includes a five-bay iron verandah on a pierced stone base, supported by Ionic columns and topped with a lean-to roof with glazed panels. To the left, there is a conservatory with canted ends and lattice-glazed upper panes. Inside, the stair hall from around 1830 has a Tuscan screen on either side, although one side now has a chimney breast inserted. There is a Doric screen on the first floor, and the saucer dome features a lantern with a rosette. Many rooms contain fireplaces in the Aesthetic style from the 1880s, and the former library includes bookcases. The building was owned and occupied by the Holt family, associated with Holt's shipping line, during the 1880s and was later given to Liverpool Corporation.
