Description
The Upper Lighthouse, also known as the Pharos, was built between 1836 and 1840 and opened in 1840. It is almost certainly designed by Decimus Burton and cost £1,770 to construct. The lighthouse is made of ashlar red sandstone and features a rusticated and vermiculated base. It has a square plan with battered walls, clasping buttresses, and a moulded cornice. The entrance door is framed by an "Egyptian" surround. The cylindrical stem of the lighthouse has a moulded base and includes four unmoulded round-arched windows and four oculi at the top. A balcony supported by console-shaped brackets features a cast iron balustrade. The summit is octagonal with a moulded cornice on console-shaped brackets, and it has a door with an unmoulded surround and marginal glazing bars, along with a planked opening on the west side.
