Description

The Lower Lighthouse was built between 1836 and 1841 and opened in 1840. It was almost certainly designed by Decimus Burton and cost £1,000. The lighthouse is constructed of red sandstone ashlar and consists of three stages. The lower stage features a Tuscan order on a two-step podium, creating a portico in antis on the south side. It has a balustrade with vase-shaped balusters, dies, and a moulded rail. The middle stage includes one blind round-arched door with plain raised frames on each side, each topped with an oculus. There is a balcony with cast-iron railings supported by plain deep brackets. The top stage is octagonal, with a moulded cornice and an octagonal dome topped by a small octagonal drum at the apex.
