Description

The Manor is a house built in 1895, which later served as a Rediffusion Training School and a nursing home. It is constructed from Accrington brick and features pebbledashed gables with applied timbering, topped with red tile roofs. The building has a rectangular plan consisting of 2 bays by 3 bays and stands 2½ storeys tall in an eclectic Vernacular Revival style, characterized by steeply pitched and gabled roofs and a central belvedere.

The east elevation, which is the main facade, is asymmetrical with two flanking roof gables of different sizes and pitches. The ground floor features three bay windows: a canted two-storey bay on the left, a rectangular bay in the middle, and another canted bay on the right, all with red sandstone window cases. The first floor jetties over the right bay window and includes a large segmental-arched window. A large decorative balcony bridges the re-entrant between the first-floor bays. The belvedere is glazed on all sides and has a hipped and swept-out roof.

Inside, there is a two-storey open hall designed in a free Jacobean style, featuring a boarded ceiling that is coved, panelled, and painted with floral motifs. An imperial staircase in Jacobean style leads to a balustraded gallery that surrounds three sides of the hall. The stairlight window contains four stained glass panels depicting figures representing the arts. The ground floor is adorned with a mural frieze painted with portraits, garlands, and Arcadian landscapes, a decorative style that is echoed in the architraves of doorcases and on every panel of doors.
