Description
Cross Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed mostly of handmade brick, with some common brick, and features a stone slate roof with projecting eaves. The building has four bays and a rear baffle entry, which is now covered by a lean-to addition at the back of the third and fourth bays.
The farmhouse currently has two low storeys, but the walls have been raised with approximately ten courses of common brick, indicating that it may have originally had one and a half storeys. The south front includes gabled dormers in the second and third bays, a wooden latticed porch at the doorway in the fourth bay, and a board door at the left end. There are four segmental-headed three-light sliding sash windows at the ground floor and three at the first floor, including those in the dormers, as well as a two-light window above the porch. Most of the windows have glazing bars. The chimney is located in front of the ridge at the junction of the second and third bays, along with gable chimneys.
The rear of the farmhouse is of less architectural interest. Inside, the house part in the third bay features an inglenook with a heck leading to the baffle entry from the rear, a stopped ovolo-moulded firehood bressummer, and two chamfered beams. The fourth bay also has two similar beams. The farmhouse is included for its group value.
