Description
Great Hanging Bridge is a public road bridge that spans the new cut of the River Douglas. It was likely built in the early to mid-18th century and is constructed from rock-faced sandstone. The bridge features three spans with low segmental arches that have triple keystones and archbands, along with rounded cutwaters and pilastered piers. The parapets are made of large tooled blocks, which are probably replacements, and the inner side of the south parapet is inscribed with the name GREAT HANGING BRIDGE. The River Douglas was improved for navigation between 1720 and 1742 to create a route from the Wigan coalfield to the Ribble Estuary. This bridge closely resembles the White Bridge in Mawdesley.
