Description

SCARISBRICK HILLOCK LANE SD 31 SE 8/31 No.40 - - II

Farmhouse, now house. Perhaps C16 or earlier; altered. Cruck-framed with brick chimney, rendered, (and some added stone), thatched roof. Three bays. Single storey with low eaves; present entrance on north side, into 3rd bay (but probably formerly on south side at junction of 1st and 2nd bays); north side has plain doorway and low 3-light casement each side; 1st bay with added stone cladding. South side has modern semi-circular bay in the centre, glazed door at junction of 1st and 2nd bays, windows like those at the front. Principal feature of interest is interior cruck frame, composed of 2 full cruck trusses with tie-beams, spurs, curved windbraces to the purlins, making a ceiled open hall in the centre, with a storeyed bay at each end; the middle bay has an inglenook fireplace with a large wattle-and-daub smoke hood, the 1st bay is axially partitioned, and has 2 re-used cruck-blades serving as lateral beams; and the cruck truss at this end has a yoke.
