Description
40 Hillock Lane is a farmhouse, now a house, that may date back to the 16th century or earlier, with some alterations. It features a cruck frame with a brick chimney, is rendered, and has some added stone, topped with a thatched roof. The building has three bays and is a single storey with low eaves. The current entrance is on the north side, located in the third bay, but it was likely originally on the south side at the junction of the first and second bays. The north side has a plain doorway and a low three-light casement on each side, while the first bay has added stone cladding. The south side features a modern semi-circular bay in the center, a glazed door at the junction of the first and second bays, and windows similar to those on the front.
The principal feature of interest is the interior cruck frame, which consists of two full cruck trusses with tie-beams, spurs, and curved windbraces to the purlins. This creates a ceiled open hall in the center, with a storeyed bay at each end. The middle bay contains an inglenook fireplace with a large wattle-and-daub smoke hood. The first bay is axially partitioned and has two reused cruck blades serving as lateral beams, while the cruck truss at this end features a yoke.
