Description
The ice house in the grounds of Scarisbrick Hall, dating from around 1800, is now disused. It is constructed of brick, stone, and earth and features two chambers. The main chamber is an egg-shaped, partly subterranean vessel lined with brick, accessible from the north-west via a brick-vaulted passage that is raised above ground level. This passage has outer, intermediate, and inner doorways made of stone, all covered by a steep earthen mound. On the southern side, a spur of this mound conceals another brick-vaulted chamber, which appears to be floored at ground level. This chamber is approached from the south side by a brick-vaulted passage that also has stone doorways, with the outer doorway showing some evidence of a decorated architrave. The structure is heavily overgrown with ivy and small trees.
