Description
White Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into two cottages, likely dating from the 17th century or earlier, with some alterations. The building features a cruck frame that is now clad in later brick, rendered, and painted white, topped with a corrugated sheet roof. It has a rectangular plan consisting of three and a half bays, with a staggered partition dividing the two dwellings in the center.
The structure is single-storey with low eaves. Cottage No. 23, on the left, has a central board door aligned with the ridge chimney, a small two-light casement window in the left end bay, and a two-light sliding sash window with glazing bars in the second bay on the right. Cottage No. 25, on the right, features a board door at the right-hand end, aligned with the gable chimney, a small two-light sliding sash window in the third bay, and a larger three-light sliding sash window with glazing bars in the fourth bay. Both gable walls have inserted windows, and the rear of the building has various additions, including a link to a modern extension of No. 23, which is not included in the listing. The gable of No. 23 is covered with sheeting similar to the roof.
Inside, there are four full cruck trusses of light scantling, including one at the gable end of No. 25 and another at the junction with the half bay at the left end of No. 23. This half bay is the hipped west end of the building and was formerly axially partitioned. All trusses have curved windbraces below the purlins, although the first truss is missing the lower part of the rear blade.
