Description
Nos 1 and 3 Bescasr Brow is a pair of cottages, now functioning as a single dwelling, that date back to the 17th century or earlier and have been altered over time. The structure features cruck framing, with a rear wall made of stud and wattle-and-daub set on a high battered base of sandstone. The front wall, which was originally similar, has been rebuilt in brick. Both walls are plastered and painted white, and the building follows a slightly wavy line, likely due to the original wall plates not being straight. The roof is covered with corrugated sheets over thatch.
The cottage has four bays, with the first bay believed to be an addition. It is a single storey with low eaves. The doorway is located in the second bay, with one window to the left and three to the right, all of which are modern. The rear of the building features windows of various sizes, mostly horizontal rectangles with glazing bars. There is a chimney on the ridge at the junction of the first and second bays, and another chimney at the right gable.
Inside, there are three full cruck trusses made of light scantling, along with one pair of purlins that have curved windbracing below. The middle cruck truss includes several vertical timbers extending from the tie-beam to the apex on the west side. At the west gable, there is a bearer between the purlins that suggests the remains of a smoke hood, and the rafters are exposed with thatch ties.
