Description

Stirk House Hotel, originally a house, dates from the early 17th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and features roofs of slate and stone slate. The building has two storeys with attics. The south facade displays two adjacent gables with a gabled porch that is 2½ storeys tall, positioned at their junction. To the left, there is a taller narrow gabled tower, likely containing a staircase. Continuous drip courses run along the ground and first floors, with the first floor of the porch overhanging on a cyma-moulded string.

The windows are mullioned, featuring an outer chamfer and an inner hollow chamfer. To the left of the porch, there are windows with 2 and 6 lights, while the first floor has windows with 2 and 5 lights. The attic includes a blocked 2-light window. To the right of the porch, there is a 6-light window, with a 5-light window on the first floor and a blocked 2-light attic window. The tower on the left has its ground floor obscured by modern buildings, a blank first floor, and a blocked 2-light attic window. The porch contains a 3-light window on the first floor and a blocked attic light.

The outer doorway features a moulded elliptical arch, while the inner doorway has a moulded Tudor arch. All gables are topped with copings, kneelers, and apex finials. The east wall has several double-chamfered mullioned windows. Attached to the east is a wing, likely from the later 19th century, designed in a similar style, with three bays facing south and mullioned windows, two of which have gables. At the rear, there are modern extensions. The interior is reported to have been gutted by fire in the 20th century, but the western room retains a wide chamfered fireplace with a segmental arched head, within which is a re-set cyma-moulded fireplace featuring a Tudor-arched head.
