Description

Backridge Farmhouse and the adjoining farm building to the southwest date from the mid-18th century and have been altered over time. The farmhouse is constructed from squared sandstone rubble and features a stone slate roof. It has a double-pile plan with a central entrance and end stacks, standing two storeys high with attics. The building has four bays, some of which contain inserted windows, and is characterized by chamfered quoins and a string course. The windows are either sashed or sashed without glazing bars, except for the right-hand first-floor casement. Bays one and three have architraves, while bays two and four have plain stone surrounds. The entrance door features a shouldered architrave topped with a moulded dentilled cornice.

To the right of the farmhouse, now part of the house, is a single-storey section that has a long four-light window with a plain stone surround and square mullions. The agricultural building to the left is built in the same style as the house and has a blocked door and window on the ground floor, with the door featuring a moulded cornice hood. On the first floor, there is a cross window with a plain stone surround, a mullion and transom of square section, and leaded glazing in the upper lights. The left gable includes a first-floor pitching door. At the rear of the farmhouse, there is a cross window for the stair and an oval attic light with a plain stone surround.

Inside, between the entrance hall and the stair, there is an oak door with moulded panels and a semi-circular head, set within a plain stone door surround that has moulded imposts, a segmental arch, and a keystone. The dog-leg oak stair features an open string, turned balusters, ramped handrails, and a curtail.
