Description
The barn adjoining to the south-west of Howgills House is a building that is currently being converted into a house, a process that began in July 1983. It is possibly from the 18th century, with crucks that may date back to the 17th century or earlier. The structure is made of sandstone rubble and features a roof covered with cedar shingles. It is a single storey and wider at the south-western end.
The south-east wall has a wide entrance with plain reveals that extend above the eaves level, topped with a gable. To the left of the entrance is a door with plain reveals, while to the right, set back beyond a section that includes a modern internal chimney, is a modern window with plain reveals. At the rear, there is another door with plain reveals alongside a modern window also featuring plain reveals.
Inside, there are two cruck trusses with hardwood purlins and a ridge. The eastern truss retains only the collar and yoke, with empty housings for a tie beam and one spur extending to the north-west wall. The western truss includes a tie beam, a collar, a yoke, and one remaining outrider.
