Description

New Hall Lane Mill is a cotton spinning mill, now used for offices, workshops, and a gymnasium. It was built in 1856, as noted on the rainwater head at the west end, and has been altered since its construction. The mill is made of red brick in English garden wall bond, with some sandstone dressings, and features a rectangular plan oriented on an east-west axis. It stands four storeys high and has a 13-window range with pilastered corners, and the first bay is topped by a sprinkler turret. The windows are segmental-headed with raised sills and altered glazing, and there is an inserted doorway in the second bay. The west end wall includes a round-headed doorway in the right-hand corner and two tall round-headed blocked openings.

Inside, the construction is visible on the second floor, which houses the gymnasium. It features three rows of simple cast-iron columns that support cast-iron beams with brick vaulting. The ground floor has been altered, while the first floor has been partitioned into offices and workshops. The mill was built for Paul Catterall and was originally known as New Hall Lane Mill.
