Description

Nos. 17 and 18 Chaddock Street are a pair of small town houses built around 1840, with some alterations. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone dressings and a slate roof. Each house has a double-depth plan, is single-fronted, and includes separate back extensions with a central through-lobby. The buildings are two storeys high, with cellars and a four-window range. They have a first-floor sill-band, a plain frieze, and a moulded gutter cornice.

The doorways are located to the left and right, each accessed by one nosed step. They are elliptical-arched with gauged brick voussoirs and have square-headed doorcases with hollow-moulded surrounds, cornices, and semi-elliptical fanlights (though the doors and fanlights have been altered). The central lobby doorway features a chamfered surround and a board door. Each house has one window on the ground floor and two above; the windows at No. 18 are sashed without glazing bars, while those at No. 17 have altered glazing. All windows have raised sills and wedge lintels, with cellar windows also featuring wedge lintels; No. 18 has a casement protected by grating, while No. 17's window is blocked.

Chimney stacks are located on both slopes at the junction of the houses. The rear of the properties features long back extensions, and No. 18 has a back yard that includes a paved-over former well. Inside, No. 18 has a dog-legged staircase with stick balusters and a mahogany handrail, as well as a two-room cellar with hob-grate fireplaces in both rooms. These houses are part of an almost complete set of late Georgian lower-middle class houses in this street.
