Description
A pair of town houses located at Nos 30 and 31 Winckley Square, Preston, were built around 1830 and subsequently altered. One house was later used as a club, while the other is now an office. The houses are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings, and have a slate roof. They follow a double-depth plan, with each house having a single-fronted elevation. The houses are three storeys high, with basements, and have 2+2 bays. They feature a first-floor sill band, a shallow frieze, and a prominent moulded cornice with a blocking course.
Each house has a doorway on the right-hand side, accessed by two steps. Each doorway has a doorcase consisting of engaged Tuscan columns with abaci, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice, with plain jambs and imposts. The doors are altered, and there is an elliptical fanlight above. To the left of each doorway is a basement window, protected by railings on a stone plinth; at No.30 the railings have alternate curvilinear and stick balusters, while those at No.31 have been altered. At ground floor, each house has two sash windows without glazing bars. The first floor of No.30 has 12-pane sashes, while No.31 has sashes without glazing bars. The second floor of both houses has 9-pane sashes. All windows are unhorned, except for the ground-floor windows of No.31, and all have raised sills and wedge lintels. Ridge chimneys are located at the junctions of the two houses. The rear of the properties and their interiors were not inspected.
