Description

This is a row of four town houses located at 7-10 Fishergate Hill, Preston, dating to approximately 1836-40. Numbers 7 to 9 were built as a single block, and number 10 was added shortly afterward. The houses have been altered since their original construction. They are built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. Each house has a double-depth plan and a single facade. They are two storeys high, with cellars, and feature 2+2+2+2 windows. The facades are characterised by a stone plinth, a sill band at first-floor level, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice. The doorways, located to the left of numbers 7 to 9 and to the right of number 10, are set within doorcases featuring engaged Ionic columns, plain entablatures and cornices. The doorcases at numbers 7 and 8 are round-headed, with number 8 exhibiting radiating tracery in its fanlight. The doorcases at numbers 9 and 10 are square-headed, with plain overlights, each containing panelled doors, some of which are modern replacements. Each house has a large, stone, canted bay window at ground floor level, finished with a moulded cornice and blocking course. The bay windows at numbers 7 and 8 have sashed windows without glazing bars, while the others have altered glazing. First-floor windows are sashed; numbers 7 and 8 have windows without glazing bars, and numbers 9 and 10 have 4-pane sashes. The roof has skylights inserted at numbers 8 to 10. Chimneys are situated between numbers 7 and 8, and numbers 9 and 10. The rear of the buildings has been rebuilt and rendered. Internally, numbers 8 and 9 include staircases with stick balusters, along with some fluted doorcases.
