Description
This former coach-house and stable block was built in 1851 as part of Ashton Lodge. It is now used as workshops. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, and has slate roofs. It comprises three rectangular blocks arranged around a courtyard, located to the north, south, and west.
The three-bay entrance block, facing west, features a projecting, open-pedimented centre with broad pilasters. It has a square-headed archway, two small round-headed windows above, a shield in the pediment, corniced chimneys to either side, and an elaborate wrought-iron weather vane on a stepped pedestal. The outer bays are also pilastered, with three similar windows on each upper floor, a cornice, and a parapet, topped with side chimneys and a hipped roof. The rear elevation mirrors this design but includes an elliptical-headed archway, a pediment panel lettered "E.P. 1851" [Edward Pedder], and large, inserted rectangular openings in the outer bays.
The north range is symmetrical, with a pedimented centre containing a large wagon archway. There are four round-headed windows at ground floor and three circular pitching holes above, on either side of the archway. Some of these windows have been altered. The formerly symmetrical south range, originally featuring a wagon archway and a doorway on each side, has now been modified with various inserted doorways.
The building was constructed by Edward Pedder of Ashton Lodge.
