Description
Grimsargh Hall is a farmhouse dated 1773, located off Longridge Road in Grimsargh. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone with quoins and features a slate roof. It has a double-depth, two-bay plan with a set-back addition at the right end. The structure stands two storeys high with a garret, and its facade is made of squared sandstone arranged in diminishing watershot courses.
In the center of the facade, there is a very wide older door made of double-layered oak planks, adorned with ornamental strap hinges and numerous studs. This door is sheltered by a shallow porch with thick cheeks and primitive imposts, which now supports a thin slab instead of a pediment. Above the door, at the first floor, is a rectangular datestone inscribed with "F H H 1773." To the right of the door, there is a three-light chamfered flush-mullion window on each floor, featuring a run-out head and sill. A similar window, which imitates these, is found on the left at the ground floor.
The left gable wall has an altered window at ground floor and a round-headed three-stage stairlight, complete with a keystone, imposts, chamfered mullions, and transoms, although the head is blocked. The right gable wall includes a set-back lower two-storey addition made of random rubble, which has a flight of stone steps leading to a loft door, and in the angle, there is a doorway covered by a large glazed porch.
At the rear, there is a five-light window with square flush mullions on the ground floor, which has replaced a former doorway, of which the lintel remains. Inside, the ground floor features re-used beams, including two with deep chamfers typical of the 16th century in the addition, one with a quarter-round moulding, and others that are chamfered with run-out stops. The full-height staircase has a closed string, square stick balusters, and a moulded handrail.
