Description

Above Beck is a 17th-century house that has been altered, with a later barn adjoining to the west. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and features a stone slate roof. The original layout was an end baffle-entry plan, and the building has two storeys. The left side of the facade projects forward. On the ground floor, there is a two-light window with a plain stone surround and a flat-faced mullion. The first floor has two windows with plain reveals, with the right-hand window being larger.

To the right, there is a wide single-storey gabled porch that intersects with a window featuring an architrave, leaving one light to its left, which is a sashed window with glazing bars. The porch itself has a door with plain reveals and features a carved head and shoulders of a man at the apex of its roof, likely re-set from another location, though its origin is unknown. Next to the porch is a later bay with windows that have plain reveals, the ground-floor window having a concrete lintel and sill. Further to the right is a wide barn entrance with a segmental arch that has tooling typical of the early 19th century. There is also a window and a door on the right, both with plain reveals. A chimney is aligned with the right-hand side of the porch.

Inside, the room accessed from the front door includes a chamfered firehood bressumer with a spear, two chamfered axial main joists, and an 18th-century spice cupboard door with two raised and fielded panels. The barn features hardwood trusses with tie beams and collars.
