Description

This is a terrace of five houses, numbered 21-29 St Mary’s Parade, in Lancaster. Built in the mid-19th century, the terrace has undergone alterations in the 20th century. The houses are constructed from squared, coursed sandstone with a slate roof, and feature both gable and axial stacks. Each house has three storeys above a cellar, with a single bay. All doorways and windows have simple surrounds, and now contain 20th-century joinery with glazing bars. The first-floor windows are sash windows, while the others are fixed lights. Ground-floor windows are divided to resemble sashes. The house at the left-hand end (number 21) has its windows to the left of its doorway; the remaining four houses are built in pairs, with paired doorways forming a central feature. There are four chimneys visible. The terrace is depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1845 and was likely built shortly before that date.
