Description
The barn, located north-east of Claughton Hall Farmhouse and adjoining the churchyard, dates back to around 1600, although its original purpose is uncertain. It is constructed from squared sandstone rubble and features a stone slate roof. The barn has two storeys, with the lower level currently used as a shippon.
On the south-east wall, there are three windows with plain reveals; the middle window has a chamfered lintel. To the right of these windows is a door with chamfered jambs. The right-hand gable includes a chimney that projects on corbels at the first-floor level. The left-hand gable has a wide entrance to the upper level, which is accessed via a ramp.
The north-west wall, which faces the churchyard, has four small windows, all with plain reveals except for the right-hand window, which features a chamfered surround. Inside this wall, two blocked windows can be seen, showcasing chamfered and stopped inner-timber lintels. The north-east gable wall contains a blocked fireplace with a Tudor-arched head. The barn's roof is supported by four closely spaced trusses that have collars and chamfered and stopped tie beams, resting on wall plates.
