Description
A pair of houses, dating from the early 19th century, located on Dalton Square, Lancaster. They have been altered in approximately 1900 and during the 20th century. The houses are constructed of sandstone ashlar with a slate roof and gable chimney stacks. They follow a double-depth plan, with doorways on the right and rear wings extending to the sides. Each house comprises three storeys above cellars and has two bays, featuring an eaves cornice.
The ground floor of number 19 was altered around 1900 to incorporate a shop front. Number 20 retains its original or early ground floor appearance, showcasing a slightly recessed doorway topped with a cornice, and a tripartite window to the left. All windows have plain reveals. The original 6-pane upper sashes remain in the first-floor windows of number 19, while number 20 displays more recently replaced 12-pane and 9-pane sashes.
The interior of each house contains a dogleg open-string staircase with scrolled balusters and a mahogany handrail.
