Description
Dolphinlee Bridge (Number 105) is an accommodation bridge built around 1797, designed by engineer John Rennie for the Lancaster Canal Company. The bridge is constructed of coursed squared sandstone and features a semi-elliptical arch with a triple keystone, where the central part is rock-faced. It has a band and parapets with rounded copings and rectangular terminals. At the water line on the side of the towpath wall, and on the opposite side of the arch, there are segment-headed recesses with a central slot. These recesses were created to hold temporary shuttering to isolate sections of the canal, helping to prevent water loss during repairs or in the event of a breach.
