Description
Nos. 8 and 9 Dalton Square are a pair of houses, now used as doctors' surgeries, built around 1800. They are constructed from sandstone ashlar with ashlar dressings, and have coursed dressed sandstone on the sides and rear. The slate roof features coped gables and two gable stacks. The buildings have a double-depth plan, with the doorways and rear wings of each house positioned together at the center of the pair.
The houses rise three storeys above a cellar and each has three bays, with a sill band on all floors and an eaves cornice topped with a blocking course. The central doorways are accessed by three steps with nosings and are flanked by low walls. Each doorway features Tuscan pilasters and a fluted frieze that supports an open segmental pediment. The doors consist of nine panels beneath a fanlight, with No. 9 retaining its original glazing bars. All windows have plain reveals and sill bands, with No. 9 displaying 12-pane sashes on the first and ground floors and 9-pane sashes on the second floor, while the other windows are sashed without glazing bars.
