Description

Hogarth House is a house built in the late 17th century and later in 1759. It is constructed from coursed rubble and has a slate roof. The house features a two-unit central-entry plan with gable stacks and stands two storeys high with an attic, comprising two bays. The first floor has chamfered quoins, and the windows are double sashes with glazing bars, separated by square stone mullions and set in plain stone surrounds. The doorway has a plain stone surround, a door with raised and fielded panels, and a glazed fanlight with diagonal glazing bars. A decorated plaque on the first floor reads '-W- 1759'. The exterior includes shaped stone gutter brackets, gable copings, and kneelers.

On the right-hand gable, there is a projecting stack with offsets and a two-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window on the first floor. The left-hand gable features a blocked chamfered doorway and a one-light chamfered window on the first floor, along with a sashed window with glazing bars and a plain stone surround. Above, there are two one-light chamfered attic windows, one of which is blocked. The left wall of the rear wing, facing an alleyway, has sashed windows with glazing bars and a timber porch over a plain stone door surround to the right, with a blocked door to its left. At the far left, there is a blocked one-light chamfered window.

Inside, the right-hand room has a re-dressed chamfered fireplace surround and a 17th-century panelled cupboard door. The dog-leg stair has three flights, a closed string, square newels with balls, and turned balusters. The first floor retains original pegged oak floorboards, two 17th-century plank doors with old catches in oak surrounds, and a 17th-century panelled attic door. The right-hand roof truss in the attic has a curved rear principal, while the left-hand gable features a corbelled chimney frame with remnants of a stone firehood.
