Description

Oak Cottage and Garden Cottage, along with a former barn adjoining them, are two houses dating from the late 17th century, marked by a straight joint between them. They are constructed from sandstone rubble and topped with a stone slate roof, standing two stories tall. The windows feature mullions and are rebated and chamfered, except for the first-floor windows of Oak Cottage, which are simply chamfered. Oak Cottage, located on the right, has ground-floor windows with three lights and two lights, and above are windows with three lights and one light. The door on the left has a chamfered surround and a battlemented lintel inscribed with 'WCS 1684'. To the right of Oak Cottage is a former barn, now part of the house, which has a wide entrance with a segmental arch and a blocked door on the right with plain reveals. Garden Cottage, on the left, features a re-tooled three-light window on the ground floor and two three-light windows on the first floor. Its door, located on the right, has a chamfered surround and a battlemented lintel inscribed with 'MCS 1910', with a blocked one-light window to its right. Each house has a chimney on its gable, with the left-hand one featuring a projecting stack. Inside, Oak Cottage has main ceiling joists replaced with pine and includes recesses for a spice cupboard and a bread oven in its gable wall. The interior of Garden Cottage is reported to contain no early features.
