Description
Gunnerthwaite Farmhouse is a house built in the late 18th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and has a slate roof. The building features a double-depth plan and consists of two storeys with an attic and two bays. The windows are sashed with glazing bars and have plain stone surrounds. The door, located between the bays, also has a plain stone surround and is sheltered by a Tuscan porch. There are gable chimneys on the roof.
On the rear wall, which faces the farmyard, there is one bay on the left with sashed windows that have glazing bars and chamfered stone surrounds. To the right of these windows is a stair window with a plain stone surround, featuring a round head, keystone, and impost blocks, and it is sashed with Gothick glazing bars. On the first floor to the right is a window similar to those on the left. Below this window, there is a doorway accessed by eight external stone steps with nosings. This doorway has a plain stone surround with a semi-circular head, flanked by Doric pilasters, and topped with an open pediment. The door itself has six raised and fielded panels, and the tympanum above features tracery decoration.
Inside, the right-hand front room has a dentilled plaster cornice and a ceiling panel over the window decorated with a head and leaf motif. Between the main front room and the stair hall, there are panelled doors set in a doorcase with fluted pilasters and a round fanlight with Gothick glazing. The dog-leg stair features an open string, a ramped handrail, and three slim turned balusters for each tread.
