Description
The Railway Viaduct, built in 1847 by J.S. Perring and D.A. Donaldson, carries the East Lancashire Railway and was restored between 1866 and 1867. It features a curving line of 19 semicircular brick arches, originally 21, each with a span of 40 feet and a height of 60 feet. The viaduct has stone plinths, gritstone facings, rusticated voussoirs, a roll-moulded string course, and a parapet. At the south end, the line crosses Blackburn Road on a segmental-arched bridge with battered rock-faced abutments. At the north end, there are three similar arches, with the central arch spanning Whalley Road, now separated from the main structure by a short embankment. The west side of the fifth arch has a keystone inscribed with "RH" M 1847, indicating Richard Hacking, the Manager.
