Description

The Baptist Church, dated 1873, is constructed from rock-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings, and has a slate roof. The design incorporates an aisled nave with transepts, a three-sided apse, and a south-east tower with a spire, all executed in the Early English style. Windows are a mix of lancets and two-centred designs with tracery, including quatrefoils. The entrance, on the south gable facing the road, features a gableted doorway with a moulded arch composed of three orders, including marble shafts with foliated sandstone capitals. Above the doorway is a large traceried window of five cusped lights with quatrefoils and cinquefoils in the head. To the left of the gable is a narrow turret surmounted by an octagonal arcaded lantern and spirelet. To the right is a tall, four-stage tower with ashlar bands, an arched doorway with four orders of moulding and a cinquefoil on each side, two very narrow lancets, a tall belfry with coupled lancets, a pierced parapet with shafted octagonal pinnacles, and an octagonal spire with lucarnes. The four-bay nave has triple windows, while the aisles have two-light windows with cinquefoil tracery. The transepts are large and contain lancet windows. Various offices are located at the north end of the building. The interior has been altered. Historical information can be found in R.J.V. Wylie's "The Baptist Churches of Accrington and District" from 1923.
