Description
The Arcade is a shopping arcade built around 1880, featuring a shop and office block above the entrance on Warner Street. The arcade has a curved plan with a glazed roof supported by slim, pierced iron braces. Panelled pillars separate the shop fronts, which include recessed doorways and low panelled aprons beneath large plate glass window panes, some of which are curved. These windows are set in slender wooden colonnettes topped with crocketed caps, from which arched glazing bars extend. Above the shop fronts, there are bands of square windows filled with leaded stained glass.
The office block facing Warner Street is constructed of red brick with white terracotta dressings and has a slate roof. It consists of seven bays and is 3½ storeys high. The central three bays, which span the arcade entrance, feature a tall gabled attic with a lunette and various terracotta decorations. The left end has a wagon arch, while the right end includes a round-headed doorway with a swagged terracotta lintel. There are two original shop windows on the ground floor; above these, most windows have been blocked or altered, but those on the right are sashed with glazing bars.
