Description
The Market Hall, built in 1868 by J.F. Doyle, is a market house located on Blackburn Road in Accrington. It features a wide rectangular plan with a gable facing the road and is constructed from ashlar. The building has a three-span roof made of slate and glass, supported by an iron frame.
The facade is robust and symmetrical, consisting of nine bays designed in an ornate Renaissance style. It includes Corinthian pilasters at both ends and in the center, flanking blind arcading topped with a cornice and a balustraded parapet. The central three bays are designed to resemble a Triumphal Arch, featuring a round-headed doorway with a bull's head on the keystone. Above the doorway is an ornate panelled attic that displays a clockface flanked by cherubs holding cornucopias, with sculptured groups of figures representing agricultural produce on either side. The flanking walls each contain a central door, ground floor sashed windows, and circular windows on the first floor. The side walls have coupled sashes and first floor lunettes, tall chimneys on the parapet, and a pedimented entrance in the center.
Inside, the Market Hall has a seven-bay nave and aisle arcade supported by slim iron columns, which hold slender roof trusses with tie-rods. A balcony runs around all sides, accommodating offices. The building was constructed by the Local Board of Health.
