Description
The National Westminster Bank, built around 1900, was originally a branch of the Manchester and County Bank. It features ashlar stonework, a slate roof, and a copper-clad dome, designed in a free Jacobean style. The building has two facades that meet at a chamfered corner, topped by an octagonal turret with 2-light stone mullion windows and corner colonnettes supporting the copper dome.
Both facades include a dentilled string course and a cornice adorned with egg-and-dart decoration, culminating in a gabled attic with finials and a mullioned window. Each facade also boasts a multiple light transomed first-floor window flanked by Ionic pilasters, with cornices above these and other double-tiered windows, as well as low attic dormers. The Queen Street facade features a doorway with a decorated surround, an oval fanlight, and a corniced canopy supported by large moulded consoles, while the other facade has mullion and transom windows.
