Description
The Church of St. Bartholomew is a Grade II* listed building located on Great Harwood Park Lane. It dates from the early 16th century, with a 15th-century tower and a 19th-century chancel. The church is constructed of coursed rubble with a graduated stone slate roof.
The west tower is embattled and features four short stages, diagonal buttresses on the west side, and angle buttresses on the east. It has a full-height rectangular stair turret at the southeast corner, a west window with a hoodmould, a niche above it, and two-light belfry openings with hoodmoulds, which have clock faces inserted on the west and south sides. Additionally, there are various slit-shaped openings. The five-bay nave and aisles are adorned with stone mullion windows that have three round-headed lights, and the north aisle extends along the wall of the tower. There is a low gabled porch at the first bay of the south aisle.
Inside, the church features an arcade of octagonal columns with moulded caps that support rounded chamfered arches, with those adjoining the chancel being from the 19th century. The high tower arch has a moulded Perpendicular head, above which is the gable line of a smaller and steeper roof. The ceiling is supported by ex situ carved and cambered beams, as the nave was ceiled in 1774. The chancel arch is two-centred, and there is a four-light east window in the Perpendicular style. The font, dated 1662, has the letters "IE," and there is one loose poppy head bench, likely from the 16th century.
