Description

Allsprings is a large house built in 1838 by James Lomax. It features rendered walls, likely made of sandstone, and a slate roof. The house has a central stairwell with chimneys incorporated into a hamper. Its facade is symmetrical, designed in the Tudor style, with five bays and two storeys, and a double-pile two-bay rear wing. The windows consist of two pointed lights with hollow spandrels and hoodmoulds.

A notable feature is the two-storey embattled porch, which includes a large moulded Tudor-arched doorway with a hoodmould, panelled double doors, and a fanlight with Perpendicular tracery. There is a string course at the first floor level and a two-light window above the porch. On either side of the porch, there are two windows on each floor, and the roof culminates in a steeply-pitched gablet with a crocketed finial. The gables display a similar design.

At the rear, the left wall of the wing has two windows on each floor. The interior boasts elaborate plaster moulding on the ceilings and friezes, although this is now damaged. The Lomax family, who were the principal landowners in Great Harwood, also built the Roman Catholic church of St. Hubert and Our Lady.
