Description

This is a farmhouse with an attached shippon and barn, built in 1834. The building was originally listed in 1966, and then amended to remove the tower from the listing description. It is constructed of sandstone, with watershot coursing on the house, the remainder being rubble. The roof is slate, with some stone slates. The design is roughly U-shaped. The west (rear) facade presents a symmetrical appearance, with a high, embattled two-stage tower dominating the barn in the centre. The barn's central arch is tall and round-headed, with a smaller pointed arch above. Each gabled wing has a large quatrefoil panel in the apex, containing a small square window. The ground floor has three windows with pointed arches, and the first floor has one. The building was commissioned by the Hargreaves family, who were involved in manufacturing, and was likely intended as an eye-catcher, visible from Oak Hill.
