Description
High Riley Cottages is a farmhouse dated 1628 that has been altered and now functions as three separate dwellings, with a 19th-century extension. The building is constructed of random rubble with quoins and features a stone slate roof, which has two pairs of coupled chimneys along the ridge and one chimney at the right gable. Originally, the structure had a three-bay L-shaped plan with a projecting wing at the third bay.
The building stands two storeys tall, and the gable of the wing includes kneelers with finials and a porch that has a chamfered doorway on the left. Above the doorway is a datestone inscribed with "1628" (with the "2" reversed). The wing has one three-light stone mullion window on each floor, along with a small blocked window in the apex. To the left, there are two similar windows on each floor, with four lights on the ground floor; all these windows have hoodmoulds and are likely restorations.
At the rear, there are two original double-chamfered stone mullion windows on each floor, all featuring hoodmoulds. The interior has been altered, and the 19th-century addition on the right matches the original style of the building. For more historical context, refer to Ainsworth Homesteads, pages 18-23.
