Description
The Magistrates Courts and Police Station, built in 1933 by Sir Percy Thomas, showcases a simplified and streamlined classical style. Constructed from ashlar, the building features a flat roof and consists of one and two storeys. The courthouse is a single storey with two different heights, and the centre of the facade is highlighted by a monumental porch that projects from the centre of the courtroom hall, which is set back. The porch, covering a deeply recessed pedimented doorway, has a giant rounded arch with voussoirs and a panelled frieze that wraps around the court hall. Flanking the porch are lower ranges that are flush with it, each featuring four windows with plain reveals, voussoirs, and glazing bars. The left side includes a simple doorway, while the right side has some basement windows and connects to the Police Station, which is two storeys tall, following the slope of Spring Gardens, and is designed in the same style. This building serves as a companion to the nearby Fire Station.
