CLAYTON-LE-MOORS HERMITAGE STREET Building in garden of Henfield House, c.30 metres north-east of it.

(Formerly listed as Building in garden of Henfield House, c.30 metres north of it.)

II

Building of uncertain purpose and date, part possibly a grotto or plant house. Two interconnected rectangular structures, single storey (rear part sunk). Structure composed internally of very large boulders, stacked as in a quarry, but part nearest house has elegant iron trusses to former glazed roof, and outer face composed of formal architectural elements, principally at the ends: the west includes an arched Gothick doorway; the east which is symmetrical, of rusticated ashlar with rusticated quoins, dentilled and moulded cornice, and pediment, has a round headed doorway with Tuscan architrave, and rectangular windows with plain surrounds (all over-scaled, probably ex situ). Other part has rubble wall and rectangular doorway with moulded lintel.

Structure now ruinous.
