Description
The Ice House at Singleton Hall is a structure likely built in the 1870s. It is made of red brick and is covered by an earth mound, with its entrance visible on the north side. This entrance features steps between battered retaining walls that lead down to an outer door. The door has a rectangular opening set beneath a segmental brick arch, with a shallow brick arch above that projects forward and spans between the retaining walls.
Inside, the entrance passage has a shallow segmental-arched roof, and the side walls are battered inwards at their bases. Brick piers support the frame of the inner door, which is currently missing. The inner part of the passage floor is paved with brick. The main chamber has a circular plan with a shallow saucer-domed roof and walls that slope inwards at the base. The floor here is also made of brick and features a cast-iron grid leading to a drain.
Historically, this icehouse is situated near an ornamental pond in the gardens of Singleton Hall, which was completed in 1873 for Thomas Horrocks Miller, the son of a notable industrialist from Preston.
