Description
The stable block, now used as garages, stores, and a flat, is located approximately 40 meters northwest of Lytham Hall. It likely dates from the 17th century but was altered and enlarged in the late 18th or early 19th century, with further changes made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of brick, featuring some diapering on the eastern outer wall, although it is mostly painted, and has slate roofs.
The stable block consists of four ranges of buildings surrounding a rectangular courtyard, with an entry at the southwest corner. The north, east, and south ranges are two stories high, while the west range is a single story. The rear wall of the main range shows evidence of vertical joints near both ends, indicating that the north and south ranges were later additions. The central section is made of handmade brick with irregular diapering, typical of the 17th century.
The courtyard-facing side of this range has had 20th-century garage doorways added for most of its length, but above these, there are two bullseye pitching holes that are now glazed. The shorter north range features two doorways and four 12-pane top-hung casement windows, along with two similar pitching holes above. The single-storey west range has seven stable doorways with overlights, including a divided stable door in the center. This stable block is included for its group value with Lytham Hall and the dovecote to the north.
