Description

Gradwells Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the 17th century and altered in 1878. It is constructed of handmade brick with stone quoins and has a stone slate roof. The building features a three-bay baffle-entry plan with a projecting porch and a rear outshut. It stands two storeys tall, with a two-storey gabled porch aligned with a ridge chimney at the junction of the first and second bays. The porch has a stone surround to a slightly-arched outer doorway, with a label over the lintel, and a narrow 19th-century sash window above. The gable displays the letters W G in brick. To the right, there is a glazed sun parlour added to the front, with a doorway inserted into the wall of the porch. The farmhouse has three windows on each floor, all 19th-century alterations featuring polychrome brick segmental heads and coupled sashes. The left gable wall has a porch in Gothic style with a datestone lettered JAL, while the right gable wall has a chimney behind the ridge and a 19th-century lean-to. The rear includes an outshut to the second and third bays, mostly surrounded by additions.

Inside, the housepart in the centre has two lateral ovolo-moulded beams, and two service rooms in the third bay also have similar beams. The kitchen in the first bay features two chamfered beams. The outshut contains an open well staircase with a moulded string, panelled square newels, barley-sugar balusters, and a moulded handrail. On the first floor, ovolo-moulded beams are visible only in the first bay, and the roof is supported by a collar truss.
