Description

Frances Darlington Court, built in 1898, consists of almshouses featuring three blocks and linking screen walls. The complex includes a row of four almshouses under a single roof, a matron's house that contains a chapel, and a block of washhouses situated between them. Constructed from coursed squared sandstone in a Gothic style, the buildings have steeply-pitched and hipped roofs covered with hexagonal slates, adorned with fleur-de-lys finials on the gable copings and octagonal chimneys with moulded caps. All structures are single-storey.

The row of almshouses is symmetrical, featuring a tall central gable with a decorated tablet, four low gabled porches (one at each end and two flanking the center), and six stone mullioned windows. At the left end, there is a screen wall with a gabled arched doorway, flanked by arched window openings, which connects to a simpler block of four washhouses. This block is also linked to the matron's house, which has a crosswing at its left end that houses the chapel. The chapel features a tall gable with a bellcote that holds a bell, and each gable has a rectangular window with three cusped lights and a hoodmould. Above these windows is a stone tablet inscribed with "THE FRANCES DARLINGTON CHARITY."

Inside the chapel, the walls are glazed with tiles, and there are stained glass windows along with a marble memorial tablet dedicated to Frances Darlington, who passed away in 1897 and laid the foundation stone of Christ Church.
